Do you struggle with falling asleep and staying asleep? I have struggled with sleep ever since I joined the military back in 2011. Even though I’m no longer in the military there are other things in life that cause me to not sleep well. I never wanted to be on a heavy duty sleeping medication as a personal preference. IAs for me I always like to do things more natural more on the holistic side first if possible.

The last couple of years I’ve done more research on natural sleep aides. With my research I found that magnesium can actually help you to get better sleep. It has been said to help you to get better longer and deeper sleep. Magnesium helps to promote healthy sleep patterns when used consistently. If you would like to do more research on how magnesium can aide in sleep you can start with this article.

I also like to use essential oils whenever I can. There are several essential oils that help to promote sleep. Lavender is a really well known oil to help promote sleep by creating a calming effect. Some other oils are Roman Chamomile which helps promote relaxation and calms the nervous system. Another one is cedar wood which helps the body to release serotonin which the body then converts to melatonin. Frankincense is another good oil to use. It helps the body to reduce stress and promotes feelings of relaxation. Bergamot (which is one of my favorite oils) helps by stimulating the body to produce serotonin and dopamine. I diffuse this oil in my home all the time. To me it smells like key lime pie! Yum! The last essential oil Im going to talk about is Vetiver also know as the “Oil of Tranquility”. This oil is said to have sedative properties that help soothe nerves bringing about deeper sleep. You can look more into these oils here.

After conducting my research on magnesium and these different essential oils that help to promote sleep I came across whats called magnesium spray. So I thought what if i combine magnesium and the essential oils to make a more natural sleep aide. So this is the magnesium spray I came up with.
What you will need
These are the things you will need for the magnesium spray. A container to place this mixture in. I like to use the amber spray bottles but you can use whatever spray bottle you want. This mixture does make a decent amount so you want something that can hold at least 8oz or use a few spray bottles if you would like. Click here for the bottles I used.

You will need some water. You can use whichever water you want. Water from the tap, distilled, filtered, or spring. Its just what ever your personal preference is.
You will need magnesium flakes. I tried to find the cleanest most pure option that was affordable. You can click here for the magnesium flakes that I use. This bag will last you awhile so you are able to make several batches from this one bag.
A moisturizing oil of choice because the magnesium can dry your skin out a little bit if you are not used to it. I used Jojoba oil but you can use whichever moisturizing oil that you would like it just needs to stay in liquid form. You don’t want the oil to solidify if the jar gets cold. Click here for the Jojoba oil that I used.
If you would like you can add essential oils to for a scent as well as the extra added benefit of another sleep aide. Again, some oils you can choose would be lavender, frankincense, vetiver, roman chamomile, cedar wood, and Bergamot. Click here to select which oil/s that you want from the ones I use.
Here’s how you do it
Step 1:
You want to boil your water. You can do this on the stove top, kettle, or even in the microwave. I use my electric kettle. Click here for the kettle that I use.

Step 2:
You will now add your magnesium flakes to the boiling hot water. Either add it to the pot you boiled your water in or place the boiling water in a bowl and then add the magnesium flakes if you used a kettle. Make sure you stir the flakes until they are fully dissolved. Click here for the magnesium flakes I used.

Step 3:
You will want to add your moisturizing oil of choice. Again, I use Jojoba oil but you can use whichever oil you want as long as it stays a liquid and doesn’t solidify when cold. If it solidifies you wont be able to spray the mixture as intended. Click here for the oil I use.
Step 4:
Put whichever essential oils that you chose in the mixture.
Step 5:
You will now pour the mixture into your spray bottle or container of choice. Click here for the spray bottle I use.
Step 6:
Shake together before each use and then spray on desired area. You want to do this on an area that will soak in the spray very well. I suggest doing a test area because magnesium when sprayed on the skin if you are deficient can tingle really bad and be super annoying. The first time I used it I did it on my forearm and it was so tingly and annoying I had to wash it off (but I also started with a larger amount of magnesium). It can also irritate the skin in sensitive areas with continued use on the same spot. So I would switch locations every other use. I just spray on the bottoms of my feet and it does the trick. It’s not tingly there for me. You can also use less magnesium flakes so it’s not as potent if you have really sensitive skin and then you can add more when you get used to it.
